In ‘Sanctuary,’ I have captured the intricate details of a beautiful nest, delicately woven together- an embroidery of line and shape.
Every contour and curve echoes the nest builder’s need to balance strength and lightness. We see such a variety of birds on the farm here, ranging from kites, buzzards, herons, wagtails, barn owls linnets and two of my favourites, the mistle thrush and wren. Their bobbing movement, amongst the stems in our garden always captures my attention. The eggs themselves are a symbol of the promise of new beginnings, the potentiality of life yet to be realised; hope, growth, and the cyclical nature of existence.
Through attention to detail, ‘Sanctuary’ invites you to pause, observe, and contemplate the deeper meaning behind the artwork that it may hold for you.
The nest here, abandoned, now lives in my home studio, holding eggs I made from paper clay, before decorating them with water colours, to get that speckled look.
This is a solar plate- a more environmentally conscious way of creating printing plates. It is light-sensitive metal plate which captures an image when exposed to light. To create the print there are many stages. I photograph, then draw the image. Next I create a monochrome version, before using a UV Vacuum machine at Leicester Print works, to make the plate. Once hardened, I take the print home and use my etching press to create prints. I experiment with various colour combinations, proofing it, then deciding on my preferred mix. I dampen paper and ink up, using the ‘a la poupee’ print making method to use different colours, mixing my own. There's more about this process in my blog post, here.
After printing the paper is left to dry flat, between boards.
